In the 1960’s and 70’s the popular trend in California was wineries. In the 1990’s it became Micro Breweries. Today, the trend is becoming Micro Distilleries. The biggest difference being that the distillery requires two California Liquor Licenses: Type 6 (Still License) and Type 4 (Distilled Spirits Manufacturer). This is true for both small and large distilleries.
It is also important to know that a distillery can not sell direct to consumer for either on or off site consumption. This is a major difference when compared to a winery or brewery. A distillery, however, is able to charge for a tasting on premises.
